The Gaming PC that Wasn’t

Last month, we saw two nearly identical systems come into QC — both purchased online as “gaming machines.”  On the outside, they looked brand‑new: fresh cases, bright LED fans, clean wiring. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think these were modern builds ready for Fortnite, Apex, or whatever your household is playing this summer.

But once we opened them up, the truth was… surprising.

Old Hardware in a New Shell

Inside these shiny new cases were components that were well over 15 years old — including DDR3 memory, which was officially launched in 2007. To put that in perspective:

  • DDR3 is 19 years old
  • It was the successor to DDR2
  • It has been replaced by DDR4 and now DDR5, which modern games actually require

So in a nutshell:

The customer bought a “gaming PC” that was basically a refurbished 2009 office computer dressed up in a new case.

When the systems couldn’t run any modern games, the customers reached out to us — and we discovered the issue almost immediately.

How Did This Happen?

Large online marketplaces allow thousands of independent sellers. Most are legitimate, but occasionally a seller slips through with misleading listings. In these cases, the exterior was brand-new, but the internals were nowhere close to gaming capable.

We’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

A Friendly Reminder for Shoppers

This isn’t meant to scare anyone — but it is a situation worth sharing.

Buying online can be convenient, but a new case doesn’t guarantee new hardware. When you buy local, you get:

  • Verified components
  • Honest specs
  • Someone who can open the case and show you exactly what’s inside
  • A real place to go if something isn’t right

And most importantly: peace of mind.

Why We’re Sharing This

If two of these systems showed up in the same week, there are probably more out there. This makes for an important consumer alert — one that could help others avoid the same surprise.

If you’re shopping for a gaming PC, or if something you bought online isn’t performing the way it should, bring it in. We’ll tell you exactly what’s inside — no guesswork, no surprises.
