THE FLOPPY DRIVE CHART

To determine the total data capacity of a floppy disk, you must calculate the number of tracks and sectors. Then multiply by 512, which is the number of Data bits per sector. To complete the calculation multiply the total by the number of heads, normally 2.
For example: Tracks X Sectors X 512 X Heads = Total Disk Space

Size Type Tracks Per Inch Tracks Per Side Sectors Per Track Storage
5 1/4" DSDD 48 40 9 360 KB
5 1/4" DSHD 96 80 15 1.2 MB
3 1/2" DSDD 135 80 9 720 KB
3 1/2" DSHD 135 80 18 1.44 MB
3 1/2" DSED 135 80 36 2.88 MB
