Windows 7 Tricks

So you just got a new computer with Windows 7 and you wonder to yourself, “What are some cool tips or tricks that are new in Windows 7?” There are times when you want to have two windows open at a time such as writing a paper while reading an online reference. In previous versions of Windows, you would have to manually resize both the windows until both took up about half of the screen. With the trick I’m going to show here, that is no longer an issue. It is also doubly useful if you have multiple screens.

Here you have your window open on the left monitor of a two monitor setup.

Now if you drag the window all the way to the left side of the screen so that the mouse touches the edge of the monitor, you will see an outline appear as below.

Let go of the left mouse button and there you go! The window now takes up just the left half of the left monitor!

Do you want to make it take up the entire monitor? Just drag the window to the top, like before, and you will get the outline.

Let go…and Tada!

Now that you have that mastered, I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “There’s gotta be an easier way to do this!” And you would be right. There’s a keyboard shortcut that lets you instantly move the window into these positions. This works great for dual monitor configurations because of how much you would have to move the mouse to get from the far left side to the far right. Try using the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and any of the arrow keys. Win + Up will maximize the window, Win + Down will “restore down” (unmaximize) and if the window isn’t maximized, it will minimize the window.

Win + Left or Right will move the window to the corresponding side of the monitor. If you have multiple monitors, it will cycle through all of the half-monitor positions and even wrap back around.
